New study untangles how proteins ensure efficient DNA repair
Scientists have untangled the function of proteins that block normal DNA repair processes and may permit unwanted cancer cell growth. New research published in Molecular Cell on June 7 details how the XRCC1 molecular scaffold protein works in tandem with the poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase DNA break-detection protein to ensure that genetic errors are efficiently corrected. A new way to account for evolution in engineered biological systems
A defining characteristic of biology is that life evolves. Traditional biological engineering views an engineered product as a final destination in the design process. However, the authors of a perspective piece published in Nature Communications on June 7 believe that a new perspective is needed for engineering of biological systems -- one that takes into consideration how a biosystem will continue to evolve over time.
